Well, today was somewhat of a mixture of an adventure. The weather was perfect. mid 60's / low 70's. No clouds, winds from the North West. I wore the standard kit with 1 base layer. I felt good right from the get-go. It didn't take me much time to get sufficiently warmed up. I think the cool air, the perfect temperature, gave me a boost. When I arrived at Route 202, I crossed the road and headed towards Banducci. As soon as I made the right hand turn, I noticed that my front tire had punctured. I looked around for a safe place to fix it. My first attempt at replacing the inner-tube failed because the spare had a puncture. So, I got my second spare and installed that one. Fortunately, it worked and I got back on the road just as quick. Given that I had warmed down, it took me a few minutes to get back to where I was before I flatted. I was able to push Banducci, between good and high tempo. The false flats were recovery sections. I reached the summit in good (running) time. Fun and games commenced the descent. Practicing my tuck all the while. I stopped to take some photos of the local wild-life at the base of Banducci. From there it was all business. I made my way out to SS in good tempo. As I reached the base of SS, I noticed my right calf starting to cramp just a bit. I backed off the pace, stretched a bit and continued. I reached the SS tunnel in under one hour. The return trip down Banducci was moderate to good tempo. More of the same on Pelisser and CVR. I reached Boss Hogs well under 1:20 hrs. The last climb was mostly good tempo, lifting to high near the summit. The false flat was a recovery zone. After that I made my way to OTR from Route 202, negotiating traffic. Fun and games from there, an effort over Mariposa to cap things off. Concentration was real good today, especially given the flat, which threw a curve ball in my wake. Ailments consisted of right calf cramping for brief periods of time as I was pushing hard. Reducing the tempo and stretching mitigated that ailment. Balance and form felt good. Gear working well, albeit the flat tire. The Inflation kit needs to be replaced as there appears to be some corrosion inside the unit. For the moment, It's still usable, but I'll likely have to purchase a new one soon. Other notes, as I was fixing my flat, there were about half a dozen cars with drivers asking to my situation. Nice to see that there were generous people around on occasions such as this. I counted at least 5 if not 6 other cyclists today. I took some photos of the wild-life, can't wait to see the photos!
