Oops! I paused my ride when Tom & I stopped at a café for breakfast, then forgot to restart the whole northern chunk of the trip, so this app just draws a straight line between the two points. My true mileage was in the 80s and elevation gain in the 5000s.
I woke up to a light rain, feeling like I could’ve slept two more hours. My legs felt completely empty and my body was weak. Then I thought about my route yesterday and that I hadn’t had time for dinner, actually hadn’t eaten a square meal in two days, just eating on the run. Probably also wearing on me that we don’t have off days.
The first 20 miles were rough, then to one of the sweetest cafés ever, and a very good breakfast!
Bobby Jo was our waitress.💕
Another 23 miles and Tom and I split off at Houston because he needed to stop at Walmart, and Dave was waiting there for him with the trailer. That is also the location where the other three started this morning.
15 Miles from camp, in Bendavis, I stopped at a little corner convenience store for some cold Gatorade. They were so friendly I ordered a slice of pizza and stayed. The kids immediately gave me a book to sign as a cyclist, that they started in 2015. The mom homeschools them and the three youngest were there and could run the shop! Oh my word, I learned more about box turtles (and World War II planes and much more, from all of them)! The females have red eyes, they stretch their neck up when you rub the back of their head, snapping turtles can’t close their shells and can take off your finger, it’s open season on them every month of the year in Missouri, except for alligator snapping turtles. Their shells have rings like trees that tell their age, they can get worn off on their underside so you can also count the top, and the youngest boy & I went out to gather worms to feed the turtles they’ve been gathering because they each get to pick one for the Memorial Day turtle race.😁🐢 I was there somewhere between one and a half and two hours, then pulled myself away and hustled on to camp.
I left my thermos on the back of my bike like I have set things on the trunk of my car! It has a little more personality now.
Have a good evening! ♥️terri
