Woke up to a lot of condensation on the tent and some morning fog. Marine fog seems normal. It burned off at 10 am, it got hot, and I stopped to put on sunscreen. The sunshine didn't last long, though. The rest of the day, I was riding through some combination of overcast, fog, mist, with the occasional sunny break. It stayed pleasantly cool.
At Winchester Bay, past Reedsport OR, I missed a turn. That made me reassess the situation: it was starting to get dark, the fog was turning into a bone-chilling mist, I didn't have my winter kit, and I was getting tired. I had just passed by a campground. The only sane option, then, was to stop right there.* The county-run campground charged $35 for a no-hookup site (compared to state-run campgrounds charging $8). It wasn't an ideal choice compared to my original goal of Coos Bay, but it would have to do. The demographic there was 99% RVs, most with dune buggies and ATVs, a few flying giant MAGA flags. Fortunately, the no-hookup zone was almost empty. A guy camping there saw that I had arrived by bike, came to chat, and offered me a banana and some nuts. I set up the tent, took a long hot shower, drip-waxed the chain (and immediately unmounted it to keep it dry), and ate some food that I had with me.
Life is what happens in between plans.
* A better option, in retrospect, would have been the nearby hiker/biker campground at Umpqua Lighthouse State Park. To find it, though, I would have had to either climb the formidable hill taking the very road where I had missed the turn, or made a roadside stop in slightly miserable conditions to consult the Internet. That reminds me of my aviation training: aim for your destination, but also know your diversion options.
