I had a mishap today. The weather is great! In the low 60's mild winds from the North West. I wore the spring kit + arm warmers. The legs felt good from the start. It didn't take much till I got warmed up. I made my way through OTR. I wasn't paying attention to time, but must have been good average time. I pulled over to remove my arm warmers and then headed up Banducci. The wall felt good. I was well within my limits. As I was making my way up the remainder of the climb, I heard a metallic snap noise. I immediately knew it was a broken spoke. Sure enough it was the front wheel that broke a spoke. I immediately pulled over to the side to assess the situation. It was a clean break off the nipple. From first glance, the rim seemed to be intact. The wheel was un-rideable. I walked to the entrance of the Alpine Forest and found a good place to rest. I decided to call home for help. Fortunately, the folks were home and I asked them to bring an extra wheel. This delayed my ride by about 45 to 60 minutes, by the time I got back on the road. The remainder of the ride was business as usual. It took about 10 minutes to get warmed up again. The descent was cold. I had to put my arm warmers back on, for the remainder of the ride. I was trying to stay positive in the mind. The miles went quick, and the return trip was aided by a tail-wind. I kept in mind the land-marks ahead, and just focused on that. I stopped one more time to swap out the GoPro battery, before the last climb. After that, no stopping. The climb went quick. Doing no less than moderate tempo. Keeping the power down, over the top. I made my way to Route 202, with a bit of traffic mitigation. From there mostly fun and games. Concentration was good, despite the mishap. I was able to keep my cool while waiting for the spare wheel. Balance and form was good. Ailments, next to none. Other than the broken spoke, the gear worked well. But the Charity app stopped recording for some reason. It continues to be problematic. Other notes, I saw 3 cyclists today. All with happy faces. No doubt enjoying this great weather!
