I planned on a big ride today. I needed to test out the legs to see how I am progressing. I got out around 8AM. The weather is nice. In the 70's with mild winds from the North West. Today was a game of patience. The legs felt ok to start. I made it to the end of OTR in good average time. The trek to WS was more or less what I expected. The morale felt better after making it pass the Highline climb. From there, it was steady tempo to WS. After making it to the end of Highline, I headed back, no stopping. By this time the wind was mild but a headwind nonetheless. I was constantly thinking about what lay ahead. Concentrating as much as I could. The kickers took a bit of effort. I was using all my gears and out of the saddle quite a bit. The Banducci Wall had minimal traffic mitigation, so I was able to concentrate on the effort. The climb to the summit of Banducci had a bit more traffic mitigation, but not so bad. After reaching the summit, I think it was around 1:36 hours into the ride. Earlier in the ride, I noticed my GPS was low on battery. I noticed it when I shoved off. So, I was monitoring it at every rest stop. I turned down the backlight to minimum, that seemed to reduce the power consumption. The trek to SS was mostly into a mild headwind. So, I was doing no more than 18MPH. I stretched a bit after passing the front entrance and then made my way around the backside. The descent off the back was a treat. I was able to put in a good sprint in the hooks. Unfortunately, the GoPro stopped recording because the battery was depleted. I was tempted to stop, but I was already going max speed. I ended up stopping at the local park for a quick bio. Shortly after, I got back on the road. The legs were feeling heavy, but I still had enough in the tank. The return trip through the farmlands was mostly moderate tempo. I was stretching as much as I could and mitigating traffic. I reached Boss Hogs in about 2:25 hours. When I reached the last climb, I pulled over to swap out my extra water bottle. The climb went as usual. I was thinking about the GPS battery and doing the numbers. I was trying to calculate the time remaining. I ended up being spot on. After reaching the summit, I pulled over to feed a Clif Bar. I ate about 3/4ths of it. I got back on the road. Legs feeling a bit better. Route 202 had some traffic mitigation, so I was on high alert. I made it safely to OTR. I had some fun on the descent. I did the push over Mariposa and made my way to the top of Weston, where I shut it down. I fed the last fraction of the Clif Bar before making it back home. Concentration was a mixed bag of things. Mostly good at the start. Patience as so so. There were gremlins all along Highline as there almost always is. Overall the morale was good since my ride was going to plan. No mishaps. Balance and form was good. Ailments. Some slight soreness in the right tendon, on the outer part of the knee. Some soreness in the right hand while riding out of the saddle. Gear held up beautifully. This bike is a tank when tuned properly. Nutrition was good. I probably should have hydrated more. I fed just as I was getting the hunger. Other notes, there were many cyclists out today. Most seeming to be having a good time.
