Today started good. I was anticipating the afternoon heat, so I was ready to start my ride about 1 hour ahead of time. I got my gear and brought it to the garage. The bike was still on the trainer, so I started to remove it. I un-tightened the bolt that holds the rear wheel onto the trainer. When I did that, the rear cable got caught inside and damaged it. I checked it after removing the bike and it didn't shift. I was fuming pretty bad at this point, as I was telling myself to be very careful while removing the bike. Perhaps a bit of bad luck? Fortunately, I had a spare cable in my saddle bag. So I managed to put it on the bike. That took me a good hour. I then had to swap the rear cassette from my spinergy wheel to my training wheel. After tinkering with it a bit, the shifting was spot on. All in all, I think I lost about 1.5 hours, but the worst part was that I was really upset. Not a good way to start the ride. So after being satisfied with my gear, I headed out. The weather was great. Much more comfortable than the previous ride. I think I was upset and pedaling in anger all the way up Banducci. I was constantly going over the mishap, just trying put my focus on the ride ahead. I was really struggling with that, but in the end all things worked out. I did moderate tempo to the end of OTR, then high tempo to the summit of Banducci. The wind was from the north west, so I had a headwind for most of the farmlands to SS. I kept no less than moderate tempo through the valley, and to the top of SS. I reached the tunnel in under an hour and out of SS in about 1:04 hrs. My legs felt good today but I had 2 ailments. My lower back started to get sore when I was making the loop around SS. I had to get out of the saddle and stretch often to keep it in check. The other ailment was my left hip. It was most notable around Boss Hogs. I had a cross-wind going north on Pelliser and it turned in to more of a headwind when I reached the last 1/2 mile on that leg. I must have lost a minute or two. I was constantly mitigating the ailments until I got through the final ascent. After that I had enough of a reprieve that I could make it home with no more ailments. My concentration was clouded with the early mishap as mentioned. So, I think I was fortunate not to let it get worse or loose too much of my focus. Needless to say, I got home in one piece. Gear, need not mention the start, but the ride itself was ideal. The wheels weren't making much noise this time. Very little noise coming from the bike, even after out of the saddle riding. Other notes, I purchased a new wheelset and will see how that turns out. I also ordered a new cable, which means I'll have to spend some time installing it. Other notes, I fed before riding as I was feeling a bit empty in the stomach. I had 2 energy bars 2 or 3 cups of gatorade. I think I judged that to perfection because I didn't have any symptoms of bonking.
