It's a great day to get out. They predicted the high of about 85 degrees. I got up as early as I could, departing just past 9AM. I wore the standard summer kit. The wind was from the North West, perfect for going to SS. Temperature was around 70 when I left. The air is on the cool side. The legs were a bit heavy to start. I felt better after I made it to OTR. I reached the summit in good average time. The Banducci Wall had some traffic mitigation, otherwise was the usual grind in and out of the saddle till reached the top. I recovered on the flats and then made my way to the summit. I reached the summit in good average time. After reaching the summit, I pulled over to recover and let traffic by. I then headed down the mountain. It was mostly safe. Minimal traffic from behind, so I was able to pick my line all the way to the base. From there, it was the trek through the farmlands to SS. I kept the tempo steady. I had a mild headwind on the way out. While I was making my way there, my GPS mount tipped up a fraction after running over the water grates. I decided to wait till I reached SS to put it back into position. After reaching the front entrance to SS, I took a few moments to recover and then made my way through the backside climb. After reaching the rear entrance, I pulled over to re-adjust the GPS mount. It took about a minute or two. After that, I made my way towards town. I put in a good sprint on the downhill. I stopped at the local park for a quick bio. From there, I got back on the road and made my way to the mini-mart. I reached the tunnel in about 1:03 hours. After making it to the mini-mart, I pulled over to mix a powder drink with the extra bottle of water that I had in my saddle bag. With no time to spare, I got back on my bike and on the road. The return trip through the farmlands was quick. I kept a steady tempo and there was a tailwind most of the way. I reached Boss Hogs in about 1:26-ish hours. So, I gave up about 3 minutes on the return. Then the last climb. It went quick. I was doing no less than moderate tempo. I kept the momentum going over the top while riding out of the saddle. After reaching the summit, I pulled over to feed. I fed a Clif Bar with some water. I got back on the road. The morale felt good because from this point, it was mostly downhill. Route 202 had traffic mitigation as I was nearing the left turn onto OTR. So, I had to sprint to get there without disturbing the traffic from behind. The descent off OTR was mostly fun and games. Pushed over Mariposa and then to the top of Weston. I was doing the number. I was on par for a 2 hour ride, so I was bit on the urgent side. I made it back home in about 2:01 hours. (Riding time).
Concentration was good. Minimal lapses, no gremlins worth speaking of. I was in the zone most of the time. Perhaps impatient here and there during the early parts of the ride. Balance and form was good. The shoes feel good. I like the saddle position. I can shift my body forward and back as needed. Nutrition was good. I fed some grapes before the ride. No need to feed more because I had breakfast just before departing. It held me over plenty. I fed a Clif Bar at the top of CVR with water and some sport drink. Gear worked flawlessly, with the exception of the GPS mount slipping. There's a mystery click when I grind out of the saddle on the climbs. I'm guessing I'll have to tighten the bolts. Other notes, no cyclists today. I saw just one runner at SS as I was making my way around the backside.
