Today's weather was another great one. In the low 70's. Winds from the North West. I wore the standard kit. I decided to add the Bear Valley road climb. I felt average out the door. Keeping in mind that I haven't taken a day off for more than 7 to 10 days. I was sufficiently warmed up by the time I reached the end of Route 202. I started the Banducci wall with moderate tempo, then good tempo, and finally high tempo over the top. There were some cyclists ahead of me by about a good 3 to 5 minutes. I used them as a reference to my pace. The remainder of the climb was good tempo. I was wondering if I was going to bridge, but they looked to be my equal. When I reached the summit, they were there taking a break. I decided to pass the usual breather at the summit and commenced the downhill and trek to SS. I held moderate to good tempo for the entire leg to SS. I took it easy going around the back climb. I took a 30 second breather, then headed downhill. I practiced my tuck and reached 40MPH. I did the usual jam through SS. Then exited with mostly moderate tempo to Pelliser. From there I did moderate to good tempo to Bear Valley road. I felt sluggish for the first 1/4 mile of the climb, after that, my legs felt more lively. I cruised the downhill and headed to the last climb of the day. Just as I made it onto the last climb, I noticed that my rear tire felt mushy. I stopped to check it and it was apparent that it was going flat. So, my next urgency was to find a comfortable place to fix it. Fortunately, it was a slow leak. I was able to make it to the nearest turnout and fix it. I think it took about 7 minutes. This may have had something to do with why I felt sluggish on the Bear Valley climb. I can't confirm, though. When I hopped back on my bike after fixing the flat, my quads almost felt like they were going to cramp. I knew they would come around, but it took about 7 or 8 minutes for that to happen. Suffice it to say, I did moderate tempo and no digs over the summit. The false flat was recovery time. I negotiated traffic on Route 202 and then headed downhill on OTR. I put in a moderate dig over Mariposa and headed home from there. Concentration was very good today. I was in the zone for the majority of the ride. No gremlins today. Although, I have to say that going onto Bear Valley road was not welcoming. Ailments were minimal. I did feel soreness in the quads after fixing the flat. That dissipated after a couple miles. Balance and form was good, but the right leg still doesn't feel like its hooking up 100%. Gear is working well. I didn't use the Brunton battery extender. The camera gave out after about 2 hours of recording. Other notes, there were 4 other cyclists today.
