Today was a warm one. In the upper 80's. Winds from the North West. I wore the standard kit. I had tough time getting up after my nap. I ended up getting up around 11AM (After having a breakfast at around 7AM). In terms of ailments going out the door, I felt ok. My right knee is doing better. I felt average going at the beginning. I did moderate tempo to Route 202. This would be the prevailing pace for most of the ride. I cruised it out to WS. Some increased efforts here and there. I made it to WS in about average time. The return trip was modest at first. That first 1/4 mile is slightly uphill and a headwind at this point. I was able to lift the pace shortly after the first mile or so. Doing mostly 14 to 17MPH into the wind. The summit was a stinger. The usual out of the saddle dig over that last 100 yards. From there, I told myself to relax, stretch and recover. Banducci lay ahead. I started the climb modest. after about 200 yards, I was able to settle into my tempo, pushing slightly over the top. The false flat was a good recovery/stretch zone. The remainder of the climb was no less than moderate tempo. When I reached the summit, I took a minute break. I brought a 3rd bottle of 28 oz Cytomax. I poored the fluid into my now empty bottle. Shortly after, I commenced the downhill. Fun and games, practicing my tuck. There was traffic behind, so I had an incentive. Once at the base of the mountain, I put it into my little ring and cruised it over the short riser. They still haven't finished the bike lane. Going out to SS was mostly moderate tempo. Again, doing 14-17MPH most of the time. I got out of the saddle where needed. After passing the front entrance to SS, I brought the pace down, stretched and recovered. At this point my right leg was exhibiting signs of cramping. Ever so slightly. It never esacalated. I did a moderate push over the rear entrance. The downhill was more fun and games, tucking my way down. Again, motivated by traffic from the rear. I stopped at the local mini-mart to get a Gatorade. Filled up and got back on the road. The return on Banducci was moderate tempo. Once at Pelliser, I was able to lift the pace just a bit. I kept this pace for most of the way to the last climb. When I reached the last climb, I was exhausted from the hours in the saddle and the heat. I did a good push over the summit. Next was the recovery zone. My legs were sapped, but no serious soreness. Just the usual fatigue from the heat and duration. Route 202 was a cruiser. Some traffic negotiation. The remainder was fun and games. Getting over Mariposa was a chore at best. I cruised it the rest of the way home. Concentration was good. I continue to be able to stay in the zone. Ailments consisted of some right wrist soreness, left shoulder pain, mild knee soreness. None of which forced a significant slowing of the pace. Balance and form was probably the lesser of things. Maybe it was the heat, or just being exhausted from having done so many consecutive days of strength training and riding. Gear is working well. The Gopro stopped recording somewhere in the first half of the ride. I had to fiddle with it at the top of Banducci. From that point, I had no issues. The 28 oz bottle proved a viable solution. Other notes, I saw a glider and 3 other cyclists. The Banducci bike lane has yet to be completed.
