Today's weather was pretty hot. In the upper 80's. Winds from the North West. I wore the standard kit. Peggy and family arrived yesterday and she was able to join me for my ride. We decided to do an improv ride. We ended up going to the summit of Highline, then back. My plan was to add Keene n Back. When we got back Peggy decided to go a little further. She was able to make it to the summit of WTR. At that point, she turned around and I went down to Keene. A knuckle-headed thing happened today. Peggy was at the intersection of OTR and Route 202 when her tail light fell off the saddle bag. She stopped to get it. When I noticed (heard her), I stopped, turned around and shortly after, my tire must have slipped on the sand and I laid the bike down. I put my hand down and the right side took the remainder of the impact. I wasn't hurt much. I had a bruise on my hand and my right glut. I was more worried about my bike. I put a small scratch on the rear derailleur and the right shifter. I also took a small chunk out of the handlebar tape on the right side. I ended up trimming the frayed part of the handlebar tape and touched up the scratches with a permanent marker. Now for the ride... Not much to tell about the first hour, as I was cruising it with Peggy. I was sufficiently warmed up by the time I reached the summit of Highline. We had fun on the descent of OTR. From there, I was able to put it into high tempo to the summit of WTR. This put some more warmup into the legs and I was able to get some of the frustration out of the earlier fumble. Peggy turned around, and I went down to Keene. I refilled my bottle with the 3rd Cytomax on my fork. I took it real easy, out of the saddle only where needed. As soon as I reached the bottom, I spared no time and commenced the climb. I felt good, but it was soon apparent that the heat was going to set in. It was the heat bouncing off the tarmac and the tailwind sections together that made the heat situation worse. It was a welcome relief when the tailwind turned head. like having a spray of cold water on the face. I saved some matches for the more difficult sections. Once reaching the Loop Monument, I stopped to reset the Gopro camera, and continue just as quick. I was doing moderate to good tempo for the remainder. I was having to hydrate frequently. I'm glad I brought my third bottle! Once across the "bridge", I knew I was safe. This turned out to be a difficult ascension due to the heat. I was glad to get this one under my belt. Concentration was good today. No gremlins and in the zone. Ailments were due to the lay down of the bike. Bruise in the right glut, some right hand palm bruising. Balance and form felt good. Gear is working well. The rear derailleur and front right shifter was slightly scratched from the lay down. Other notes, The mountain bike looks to be in good working order.
