Well Today was a scorcher! In the 90's, warm winds from the North West. I decided to go out to Keene first. I felt sluggish to start. It became apparent, as soon as I got out the door, that today was going to be a tough one, due to the heat. I cruised it to the summit and spared no time to descend. I was mostly soft pedaling, out of the saddle when needed. After reaching the base, I did an immediate U-ee and started the climb. My legs were feeling a bit heavy. This persisted for the first mile or two. The heat was setting in. The sun was high up in the sky and was glaring down on me for the entire ascent. I was doing my best to save my matches for the steeper sections. Good thing I did because I was in a bit of agony when I got there. My mind was set on making it to the summit without stopping. Either way, I had no choice. I held a pace that was slower than normal to stay within my tolerance from the heat. This was more of the same for the entire ascent. I made a modest push over the summit, then cruise control the remainder. I was constantly reminding myself where I was, landmarks and time left to the summit. This kept my mind occupied and not so dreary about riding in this extreme heat. All the while, I was contemplating what to do next. Either home, or Banducci. When I reached the summit, the heat was getting worse, but not completely unbearable. I decided to go to the end of OTR and see how I felt. I refilled my bottle with Cytomax. It became apparent that the heat subsided in this part of Tehachapi. After making it to the end of OTR, I felt good enough in the body and mind to add Banducci. When I reached the wall, I started modest, then picked up the pace slightly. I was in my 28 and 32 for most of the climb, near my maximum over the top. The false flat was a recovery zone. I did mostly moderate tempo to the summit. When I reached the summit, I took a 1 minute break. Regathered myself and hit the descent. It was mostly fun and games and a nice reprieve from the relenting heat. This was more of the same for the remainder of the ride. Just pushing over Mariposa and then headed home. Concentration was good. I was near my maximum on Keene. I think my concentration aided the torture of today' climb. Ailments consisted of general fatigue in the legs. Some right quad soreness. A hint of right hand numbness and pains here and there in the lower body. Balance and form felt good. Gear is working well, the Gopro with Brunton battery pack worked flawless. The 128GB card is working great. Other notes, only one runner, no other cyclists today. Today's ride was one of the first in the summer to go down to Keene first. Had it been the opposite, I would have no doubt been in serious pains from the heat.
