Today was a big day! Consider it a triple ride. I planned on departing before 8AM. When the alarm clock went off, I hit the snooze button. I must have dozed off because I woke up a second time and a half hour had past. Nevertheless, I got up, had breakfast, threw on the gear and headed out the door. The weather was nice. Mild winds from the South East. The legs felt pretty good to start. I put extra provisions in the mail locker for later. I was eager to spot some of the competitors for the BrewFondo mountain bike event. This was on the back of my mind because I would cross paths with them on my ride today. I made it to the summit of OTR in good average time. The legs felt pretty good. After reaching the summit of OTR, I headed out to WS. The wind was mild, but from the East. This meant I would have a nice tailwind on the way back. All the while I was looking around for participants. To my amazement, there were none. I saw markers on the ground, though. After reaching WS, I headed back, no stopping. The return was more or less what I expected. A bit faster on the way back, aided with the tailwind. I made my way back to Banducci and headed up the Wall. Still, no signs of participants. There was minimal traffic mitigation. The Arosa climb went quick. I was guessing the time it would take to reach the speed bumps. It kept me distracted. I was near max over the top. I headed around the backend and to the summit of Banducci. I reached over 43 MPH on one of the dips. After reaching the summit, I pulled over to recover for a minute or two. I noticed the backlight was on full power on the GPS, so I turned it down. Glad I caught that because the battery went down to 47% and I was hardly half way done with the ride. Suffice it to say, it lasted the remainder of the ride. The descent off Banducci was a bit on the cautious side. I made my way through the farmlands. I was going into a headwind at this point. I stopped once to bio at the facilities. As I was approaching the CV climb, I decided to feed after making it to the summit. The legs were getting fatigued, but no cramping or over soreness. I had to micromanage my efforts. As planned, I stopped to feed at the summit. I quickly ate a Clif Bar, hydrated and then got back on the road. Route 202 had some traffic mitigation. After making it back to OTR, I was able to relax a bit. This is where I spotted two participants. One was just in front of me, and another behind me by a few hundred yards (maybe more). I tried to keep up with the guy up front to see where he was headed. I was able to follow him all the to Mariposa and Country Club (there-abouts). I made my way back to the mail lockers and swapped out provisions. Shortly after, getting back onto the road. I made my way to the top of WTR and headed down the mountain. I had slight tailwind for about half the descent. Mostly fun and games. Half way down the mountain, the wind did a 180. To my favor. When I reached the base, I headed back up the mountain, no stopping. I needed to keep the legs as warm as possible. They responded well, and I was able to hold good tempo for most of the climb. My HR was slightly elevated. In the 160's for the last 2 miles or so. I was doing in and out of the saddle efforts. Alternating legs while in the saddle. The landmarks went pretty quick. I had to coach a bit. I kept my tempo going over the top. After reaching the summit, I took a few moments to recover and headed back to the mail lockers. When I made it there, I grabbed my provisions and headed back home. I shut it down at the top of Weston. Concentration was good for the most part. Perhaps impatience and eagerness on occasion. I had the BrewFondo in the back of my mind. I was hoping to spot some participants. I saw 3 after making my way back to OTR. Balance and form was good. Ailments, some hand numbness while out of the saddle. Perhaps new gloves are in order. Nutrition was good. I drank most of my sport drink and about one and a half of my water. I fed one Clif Bar. I forgot to bring the extra that I stashed in the mail locker when I got back to head out to Keene. Turns out, I didn't need it. Gear worked flawless. Will have to remember the backlight setting on the GPS. IE, keep it turned down for big rides like this one. Other notes, saw many cyclists today as I was making my way back from Keene. No clue if it was organized, but likely. There were no convenience stops that I was able to see for the BrewFondo as I was crossing paths.
