Today's weather was perfect for bike riding. It was in the low 70's with moderate winds from the South-West. I woke up today debating if I was going to do an additional part of the Willow Springs n Back ride. I decided that if I felt good then I would climb up Banducci. The winds were ideal. I did moderate tempo on the way out to Willow Springs and increased the tempo a bit for the remainder of Highline west. I felt good coming back and decided to add the Banducci climb. My legs felt good, I was able to do moderate to good tempo. I had no ailments at this point, other than exhaustion from the effort. One factor that I had to decide was the amount of provisions I had and if I felt confident that they were enough to do the abridged SS route. I had a little less than half of fluids. I felt confident that that was enough to go for it. Upon deciding to continue, I ate my power bar, with some fig bars as my bailouts. The most difficult part of the ride was already done, so I continued and constantly gauged my efforts so that I wouldn't bonk and do more harm than good. In my mind, I knew that I was going to have a headwind for most of the way back (until I reached route 202). That proved to be true and I gauged my efforts accordingly. Some of the ailments that I was experiencing was on the last 30-40 minutes of the ride. My lower back became sore on a few occassions, I had a bit of soreness in my right hip, and my right hand was slightly numb. None of which were significant enough to cause me to make an unscheduled stop. I stretched while on the back, constantly getting in and out of the saddle. And that's what kept my body out of the red zone. My concentration for the ride was, for the most part, right on. My focus started to drift a little when I reached the bottom of the last climb. I was able to keep it in check and reel in the crazies. When I started to loose focus, I just reminded myself to pay attention to my form. That seemed to do the trick. Balance was better than average, but I was having to constantly put attention into it. Gear is working well, I had no mishaps, pretty much status quo. Other notes, I took some photos of the green house project that's going on in the SS farm-lands. Stopping here and on top of Banducci were the only times I rested for a few moments. Other than the usual stopping for traffic, of course.
